Sunken bulldozer cancels snowmobile races

Posted: Updated:

CHIPPEWA FALLS (WKOW) -- A bulldozer broke through the ice in Chippewa County causing the weekend snowmobile races on Lake Wissota to be canceled.

The 10 ton bulldozer went through the ice in 40 feet of water several hundred yards from shore. Sheriff's officials say Kirk Brown of Brown Excavation was using the bulldozer to get a race track ready Saturday when the incident occurred.

Our affiliate WQOW reports that Brown jumped to safety before the bulldozer sunk. The DNR will help with the recovery efforts.
