Atlanta braces for heavy winter storm

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, GA (WKOW/AP) -- Emergency planners in Georgia say they're prepared for another round of winter weather with lessons from last month's Jan. 28 storm still top of mind.  Thousands of vehicles were gridlocked for hours on ice-slicked metro Atlanta highways.

This time around, Governor Nathan Deal is encouraging drivers to stay home.

Deal faced substantial criticism for Georgia's preparedness during the previous storm.  In a news release Sunday, Deal said emergency response agencies are on alert and beginning to ready crews.  Deal has planned a news conference for Monday at noon to discuss winter storm preparations.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather watch from 7 p.m. Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday and a winter storm watch from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning for the metro Atlanta area.
