UPDATE: Columbia Co. housing 17 cats displaced by Adams Co. fire

Posted: Updated:
PORTAGE, Wisconsin (WKOW) -- The Columbia County Humane Society has taken in 17 cats displaced by a fire Monday morning.

The cats, previously housed at the Adams County Humane Society, were transported to Portage Monday afternoon.

A fire broke out Monday morning at the Adams County shelter. It's believed to have started in a laundry area.

After the fire was extinguished, dogs kept in Adams County were allowed to remain in the building since the area where they are kept was not impacted by smoke and soot.

But the fire did send smoke into the area where the cats reside. They needed to be removed for cleaning and repair.

The Columbia County Humane Society is in need of non-clumping kitty litter to help it accommodate the extra guests.

If you'd like to adopt one of the cats, visit the society's website here.

The Adams County Humane Society says it is in need of laundry detergent, laundry baskets, hampers and bleach, which were all items lost in Monday's fire.
