IOWA CITY, Iowa (WKOW) -- An Iowa sheriff said he's jailing a woman suspected of kidnapping a baby apart from the general, inmate population for safety reasons.
Cedar County Sheriff Warren Wethington said Monday that Kristen R. Smith, 31, of Denver is in her own cell at the county jail in Tipton, Iowa.
Wethington said he didn't feel comfortable holding Smith with other female inmates who had seen media coverage regarding the allegations against her.
Smith was charged with kidnapping Friday after the police chief in West Branch, Iowa discovered missing Wisconsin newborn Kayden Powell, alive and well in a plastic bin outside a gas station.
A criminal complaint against Smith alleges the boy was left outside in the cold for up to 29 hours.
The FBI alleges Smith took the boy from her half-sister's home, then left him outside before being arrested Thursday.
