DUBUQUE, Ia (WKOW) - Heroin is a dangerous and addictive drug that's on the rise nationally.

Tune into WKOW on Thursday at 6 p.m. to hear from Angela Ross, a Madison mother battling for her son's life in his fight against heroin addiction.

"There's just this something else that has such a powerful control over him," Ross said. "It literally has rewired his brain."

According to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number of people reporting heroin use in the past 12 months rose from 373,000 in 2007 to 669,000 in 2012.

Just this week, a suspected heroin overdose took the life of Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Hear about the battle against heroin from the perspective of local law enforcement and drug counselors as well.

"Since 2011, we've conducted over 68 heroin-related investigations," Dubuque Drug Task Force director Sgt. Gary Pape said. "Those include anything from search warrants to drug buys."

Heroin addiction does not discriminate.
