PAOLI (WKOW)-- A bumpy stretch of highway 69 is about to get a much needed facelift. Harsh weather is to blame for deteriorating the road between
Verona and Belleville. That's why the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has decided to fix the road as soon as it can.
"It's a short term fix. You're either going to go deep and really redo it and then there's no guarantee," highway 69 commuter Paul Goplin says.
The original plan was to repair the road temporarily with patches some time in 2014 and to hold off on resurfacing the highway until 2016. DOT officials however, decided the project simply couldn't wait any longer. On Friday they announced plans to resurface the road in Fall of 2014.
"If you get stuck in a rut I mean it could throw you down before you know what happened," driver Jim Dimattia says.
Transportation officials say the harsh winter wrecked havoc on the road this year, creating new cracks and buckles in the road and making older ones even bigger. It's why they've decided to push the project two years ahead of schedule.
"I've been at the DOT for 25 years and I haven't see a pavement that's in worse shape than this one is right now," WisDOT Regional Planning Chief Jeff Gust says.
DOT officials say the re-pavement project will have minimal affects on drivers, because they plan to work on it one lane at a time. Plus, there are several alternate routes that people can take including County Highway PB.
The resurfacing project will cost between $2-3 million, but DOT officials say it's only a temporary fix. They plan to tear up the entire road and put down a new one sometime in 2019.
PAOLI (WKOW)-- Harsh weather is also to blame for a stretch of highway connecting Verona and Belleville. The stretch of Highway 69 has caused numerous problems for drivers who use the road everyday. Many have been calling for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to resurface the road. On Friday transportation officials announced their plan to fix the road in Fall 2014.
DOT officials say road conditions on the highway are arguably the worst they have seen in nearly 25 years. Originally their plan was to conduct temporary repairs later this year and resurface the road in 2016, but the harsh Winter made the situation an immediate priority for the department.
Commuters who drive this stretch of highway say they try to avoid it at all costs. Many have posted comments on the WKOW 27 News Facebook page. We want to hear what you have to say about the project. Join the conversation at https://www.facebook.com/27news?ref=hl
