MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- The Middleton Fire Department says damage is estimated at $100,000 for an apartment fire on the 1200 block of Sweeney drive.
The fire was called into Dane County Communications around midnight Sunday. The fire was contained to one unit and was started because of a kitchen mishap. That unit is considered a total loss.
Two families were helped by the Red Cross. In all, six people needed to be rescued. Firefighters used ladders to rescue four people from balconies and two others were rescued inside, however, the efforts were hindered due to the hallways not being cleared. Seven cats and two dogs were also rescued from the building.
None of the residents received any injuries, but one firefighter needed to be treated for a cat bite.
The first floor of the building has been allowed back inside. No word yet when the second floor will be allowed in.
