MADISON (WKOW) -- Searching for rare plants and animals at 100 properties is being offered for free by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. These types of reviews cost approximately $150.
The properties will be chosen through a lottery system, and landowners interested in the searches can enter the drawing on the DNR website through March 10th. The winning properties will be picked on March 11th and landowners will be notified by March 14th.
If any rare species are found during these searches the DNR will give the landowners recommendations on how to maintain and protect the habitat. Officials say that even if the landowners aren't interested in conservation the reviews can help avoid impacts on rare species and secure permits for projects.
