MADISON (WKOW) -- Road crews continue to clear snow from a major winter storm in Wisconsin.
West and northwest Wisconsin will get 13 to 17 inches by Friday afternoon. The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs says the highest snow fell near Lake Superior.
Here are a few snow totals as of 5:30am: Superior reports 12.4 inches, Ashland has 11 inches, and Eau Claire has 7.4 inches.
On Thursday night, the Wisconsin State Patrol requested Wisconsin National Guard members to check rest areas along Highway 53 from Eau Claire to Rice Lake for any stranded motorists. The National Guard found several semi-trucks and a car parked at a wayside near Chetek with all drivers and passengers in good condition.
MADISON (WKOW) -- A winter storm bringing rain, sleet and snow hit Wisconsin Thursday, knocking out power and making roads slick.
The Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says the storm could dump 15 to 18 inches of snow in parts of northwestern Wisconsin by Friday morning. As of Thursday evening, Webb Lake received 3.6 inches of snow, but the National Weather Service says the snow will increase, reaching an inch an hour overnight.
Investigators in Eau Claire believe the partial collapse of a Kmart is weather related. Our affiliate in Eau Claire, WQOW-TV, reports that the piece of the roof that collapsed was 75 feet by 75 feet. There were customers and employees inside when it happened, but no one was hurt.
Roads were snow-covered in the Eau Claire area and other parts of northwestern Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to 13 crashes and 16 runoffs in the Eau Claire area alone by early Thursday evening.
As of 7 p.m. Thursday, the Emergency Operations Center said about 440 homes and businesses were without power. Officials warned that high winds overnight could bring down more power lines.
