Drop in number of Wisconsin farms

Posted: Updated:
KEWAUNEE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Farmers say they understand why their numbers have dropped in Wisconsin.

The USDA's latest census report shows Wisconsin lost 8,700 farms from 2007 to 2012.

Todd Augustian runs a farm in Kewaunee County.

He says in this economy, small farms face an uphill battle.

"It's just too hard to milk 40 cows and make a living. The cost of equipment and the cost of everything else. You just can't do it anymore."

But Augustian says he believes there will be more opportunities for young farmers as technology evolves.

Agriculture agents say farmers have already become a lot more efficient than they were years ago.
