Growing WI economy renews demand for apprentices

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (AP) -- The growing need for skilled manufacturing workers is leading to a revival in apprenticeships in some parts of the state, particularly in Madison, Milwaukee and the Fox Valley area.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says the state's dormant construction industry is starting to rebound. That's creating demand for skilled workers across all construction trades.

Some areas are able to fill that demand but others still have a shortage.

Wayne Belanger of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin says in recent years there was a shortage of work. He says now there's a shortage of workers. He says many people in trades have either retired or switched industries, creating a void that's only being filled slowly.

Construction companies say a challenge is persuading young people to consider apprenticeships.
