Avoiding dry winter skin

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Winter in Wisconsin can be harsh on your skin, and this one has been especially tough. But, there are steps you can take to help sooth your itchy and dry skin.

Dr. Michael Pomroy, a Meriter Dermatologist, says this winter has been rough on our skin.

"We've had some really cold temperatures," Dr. Pomroy said. "And when we heat our house, the lower the humidity goes in our house, and the lower it goes,  the more it sucks water out of our skin and it gets really dry and itchy."

The following are tips from Dr. Pomroy:
  • Bathe in lukewarm water
  • Use mild, fragrance free cleansers
  • Moisturize after showering, hand washing
  • Use creams instead of lotions
  • Use non-irritating laundry detergent
  • Use a humidifier
  • Do not sit directly in front of a fireplace or space heater
  • Use lip balm
  • Apply sunscreen
