HHS: Enrollment in private health insurance through ACA has hit 4 million

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- With more than a month to go before the sign-up deadline, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) officials say more than four million people have now signed up for private health insurance plans through the federal and state marketplaces set up under the Affordable Care Act - more commonly known as Obamacare.

"With individuals and families enrolling in coverage every day, we continue to see strong demand nationwide from consumers who want access to quality, affordable coverage," Marilyn Tavenner, Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services wrote in a blog post Tuesday afternoon.

HHS set its original enrollment goal at seven million by March 31st, but Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged last week that the marketplaces may not meet that number.  Biden said the final total may fall closer to five or six million enrolled.

A full enrollment report for February will be released by HHS in mid-March.
