Does it Work? WaxVac Ear Cleaner

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The commercial for WaxVac claims it's a better way to clean the wax out of your ears. But does it work?

The as-seen-on-TV product promises it's even safe enough for kids. So we decided to first try it out with 4-year-old Ella Betts. "I liked it. It blowed air."

If we took Ella's word, it worked! But we decided to dig deeper.

Dr. Edward Gonzales has been an ear, nose and throat doctor for more than 25 years. "We see, I would say probably about fifteen percent of my ear patients are specifically for ear wax problems."

He says he understands why people are interested in WaxVac. "And so the whole idea is reasonable so it's reasonable to say lets just suction that wax out. The problem is that it takes a pretty powerful suction to pull that wax out."

The WaxVac runs on two double-A batteries. When we tried it, it barely vacuumed up water, making it hard to believe it would even suck up wax. But that's OK. Dr. Gonzales tells us wax is actually good for our ears. "Well, I think the bottom line is when it comes to ear wax, the vast majority of us don't need to have our ears cleaned out because out ears are self cleansing and that's what people kind of forget and ear wax is normal. We have to have wax because it protects us from infection."

We give the WaxVac a "D" rating. It didn't really clean your ears, but it sure looks and sounds funny.
