Permanent ice shacks must be removed by Sunday

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Even though its still freezing out, permanent ice fishing shelters will soon need to be taken off the ice.

The DNR says shelters must be removed by Sunday from all lakes south of Highway 64, which cuts across the state from Marinette to New Richmond.

Shacks north of that line have until March 12 to remove them.

The DNR says even though there is still plenty of ice on Wisconsin lakes, they will not be pushing the deadline back because it's part of state law.

DNR Safety Warden Bill Yearman says, "Depending on whether the shanty is frozen in or you have difficulties getting to it, it may take you longer than usual, or you may have to even make some other arrangements to get some help or some other vehicle out that can do it. So, you should start thinking about it now."

Fishermen can still use portable shelters to ice fish after the deadlines, but they must be removed every day.
