Kristen Smith pleads not guilty to federal kidnapping charge

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Federal court records show Kristen Smith entered a not guilty plea Wednesday to a kidnapping charge.

The 31-year-old Smith entered the plea Wednesday during a hearing in federal court in Madison.

Smith is accused of taking Kayden Powell from a home in the town of Beloit on Feb. 6, and then abandoning the child outside a gas station in West Branch, Iowa. The boy was found alive.

The federal charge stems from the fact that Smith allegedly took the child across state lines.

Court records show Smith's trial and jury selection are set for June 23. She faces life in prison if convicted.
