UPDATE: Racine school closed Friday after fire

RACINE (WKOW) -- There will be no class Friday for some students in Racine because of a fire at their school.

It broke out around 1:30 Thursday morning in the building for Mitchell Elementary and Middle School.

The fire caused the roof over the school gym to collapse.

Firefighters had trouble with their hoses freezing in the cold, but no one was hurt.


RACINE (WKOW) -- Emergency crews are responding to a fire at a Racine school Thursday morning. Crews from multiple area fire departments were called to the scene.

Officials told our affiliate, WISN,  that the fire was reported at approximately 1:30am at Mitchell Elementary and Middle School near Mitchell Street and Drexel Avenue.

The school district say classes are canceled at both the elementary and middle schools Thursday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
