February Jefferson Award: Carole Klopp

MADISON (WKOW) -- Carole Klopp has spent most of her adult life volunteering with kids.

Twenty years ago, when her daughter was a student, Carole helped create a student-led volunteer club at Madison Memorial High School.

The Spartan Youth Service Team started with 25 students. Today, nearly 200 are in the club.

"For kids, finding volunteer activities is kind of difficult, because of age requirements, etc. So, we're providing a natural outlet for them," she said.

Carole also volunteers with younger kids.  As the unpaid executive director of Reach A Child in Madison, she works with local police and fire departments, providing them with backpacks full of donated books for children involved in traumatic situations like fires and domestic violence.

The books provide a therapeutic distraction for a traumatized young mind.

"If we can impact that memory in a positive way, with a positive experience, maybe we'll help to decrease the after effects of what that traumatic experience was," she said.

Ultimately, Carole sees her volunteer work as something of a patriotic duty.

"Volunteering is, I think, the basis of this country. They started out as volunteers. And I think it's really what we're all about here."
