A proposed bill could force first time OWI offenders to appear in court

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) --  A bill is moving forward that could make first time OWI offenders appear in court.

Currently a first time drunk driving offense is treated like a speeding ticket. The offender can pay the without going to court.

This bill requires a court appearance, and if the offender does not show, they could face another $300 fine.

A Senate panel sent the measure to the full Senate today. The state Assembly passed it back in November.
