EXCLUSIVE WEB VIDEO: See "El Chapo's" secret underground tunnel system

Posted: Updated:
CULIACAN, Mexico (WKOW) -- On a quiet residential street in Culiacan, Mexico is one of five "El Chapo" Guzman safe houses. There is a school just across the street.

Even before entering, security cameras and reinforced steel doors reveal the priority of security. The home is modest and basic, with a small kitchen. Some of the bedrooms are pretty dingy, but officials say that was part of Guzman's strategy: to have very modest accommodations, so he could hide in plain sight.

In almost every bedroom are two TV screens, one for security and one for television.

It's not until you go into the bathroom the picture of this normal house really transforms. Beneath the bathtub is a secret tunnel. It's carefully constructed of wood and there's an electricity system running throughout. Once the constructed part of the tunnel ends, there's a door to the sewer system, an ideal escape route.

The tunnel system, though, also leads to another safe house just down the road. You come into the home under the bathtub, just like the first house.

One of the safe houses is where Guzman escaped from when he was being pursued by Mexican Marines. The Marines discovered the entire network of underground tunnels and safe houses when they arrested the head of Guzman's security.
