Bowlin' for Colons raises money for cancer research

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Hundreds of people all across Madison laced up their bowling shoes Sunday for the 13th annual Bowlin' for Colons event.

A number of local bowling alleys were filled all day with people working to raise money for colon cancer research. All the proceeds generated by today's event go to the UW Carbone Cancer Center. Dr. Daniel Mulkerin, a cancer specialist at the center, says the money raised at today's event is vital to finding a cure.

"We've seen great progress in diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer," says Mulkerin. "The funding that comes from these kinds of community events really helps make that progress happen."

For colon cancer patients, like Patty Klecker, Bowlin' for Colons has an even deeper meaning.

"All the money goes back to the patients, which is amazing and really does make a difference," says Klecker. "That money is giving hope, and it's giving a better tomorrow for people like me and many other people who are affected by cancer."

March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.
