Driver killed in crash in Rock County

ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- One woman was killed and two other people were taken to the hospital after a crash in Rock County.

Just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, deputies with the Rock County Sheriff's Office were called to Highway 59 near E. Gould Road, which is between Milton and Whitewater.

The office's Accident Reconstruction Team says their initial findings show an eastbound car began to slide into the east ditch, but when the driver tried to steer out of the ditch, her vehicle spun counterclockwise and entered the westbound lane, where it was hit by an oncoming van.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old woman from Milton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Two people in the van were taken to the hospital. The driver, a 56-year-old man from Whitewater, was taken by Flight for Life to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville, where he is in serious condition. A 63-year-old man riding in the van was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators say speed and road conditions appear to be factors in the crash.
