MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison firefighters and police officers exchange baked goods and cookies for fruit and veggies.
Over 200 Madison firefighters and police officers have started the "Battle of the Badges" competition to lose weight and make healthy choices to accomplish fitness goals.
Recent research shows that rates of cancer, heart disease, type II diabetes along with other health issues are higher for police officers and firefighters than those found in the general public.
Traditionally, occupational factors like long hours, shift work, sleep deprivation, and poor eating habits at work place firefighters and police at high risk for weight gain and obesity. The departments are challenging each other to see which department can lose the most weight. The challenge runs from now until May.
The departments want to encourage the public to get in shape and stay healthy. They hope to start this program with other local departments in the future.
