Madison woman donates tax refund for school lunches

Posted: Updated:

ALGOMA (WKOW) -- A Madison woman who was inspired by a man who paid lunch balances at a local decided to do the same for Algoma High School.

Our Green Bay affiliate, WBAY, reports Algoma High School received an unexpected phone call Friday morning from an anonymous Madison woman who wanted to donate her tax refund to the school lunch program.  More than half of the Algoma student population receives a reduced cost meal, and some of the accounts go unpaid.

School Secretary Wendy Viles says, "We were quite shocked at it."

The donor tells WBAY they decided to "help them have a fund for kids, that maybe their parents didn't want to share that they were struggling and wouldn't even fill out the paperwork, so kind of have a slush fund for other kids."

The donor and her husband wanted to remain anonymous and was in town for the weekend.  The total donation came out to one-thousand dollars.
