State Senate approves measure moving up timeline for lobbyist donations

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin State Senate passed a bill Wednesday morning that would allow lobbyists to start giving campaign donations seven weeks earlier than they can under current law state law.

Lobbyists could make personal donations the day candidates can circulate petitions for office, which is April 15. Currently, they can't make any donations until June 1. Lobbyists still couldn't give campaign donations to legislators while they're in session.

Republicans who approved the bill say the change is needed because partisan primaries have been moved up from September to August. Democratic opponents, however, the move only feeds into the view politicians are beholden to lobbyists.

The bill passed 17-16, with Sen. Dale Schultz the only Republican to join Democrats in opposition.
