American Red Cross needs blood donations after winter months

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- As we start to thaw out from this harsh winter and feel spring-like temps, organizations like the local chapter of the American Red Cross, still need help to make up blood drives cancelled during winter.

It's equivalant to being out of business for three days. That's how many blood drives the American Red Cross had to cancel during winter because of storms and harsh temperatures.

With about 20 blood drives cancelled across Wisconsin they say it made it very difficult to get the blood donations necessary to keep a healthy supply in Dane County. Organizers say they're playing catch-up trying to get donation drives back on the calendar. Blood has a shelf-life of 42 days making it necessary to always have blood drives.

If you're looking to donate and help our local chapter of the American Red Cross, click here for a list of blood drives.
