Ice caves close for the season

Posted: Updated:
BAYFIELD (WKOW) --  The natural spectacle of the Apostle Islands ice caves is now history, in more ways than one.

This year's incredible ice sculptures brought 138,000 people to see the caves on Lake Superior, near Bayfield.

That's a new record; by comparison, 12,700 people visited in 2009, the last time the lake froze enought to make the caves reachable by foot.

The National Park Service closed the caves at midnight Monday.

Officials say the ice was getting too weak to support people walking to and from the caves.
