Police catch Beloit burglar because he drank at crime scenes

Posted: Updated:
BELOIT (WKOW) -- A Beloit man is arrested for burglary, after DNA evidence was found on a beer bottle at the crime scene.

The Beloit Daily News reports Jason Scott Ecklund, 34, is charged with one count of burglary as a repeater and one count of misdemeanor theft as a repeater. In June, he was convicted of felony theft and put on probation for three years.

But in August, Beloit police were sent to a residence on Spring Creek Road for report of a stolen scooter. The victim found a mysterious beer bottle in his backyard, which was swabbed for DNA evidence. The Wisconsin Crime Laboratory matched it to Ecklund, according to the Beloit Daily News.

In September, an officer was also dispatched to a burglary on Grant Street. Someone had stolen 18 fishing rods, a leaf blower and liquor. Another beer can was found along the sidewalk, also matching the DNA profile of Ecklund.

When Ecklund was arrested this month, police say he admitted he sold the fishing rods for $150 so he could buy cocaine, and traded the scooter for cocaine.

Ecklund has an arraignment scheduled for March 26 in Rock County Circuit Court.
