Madison Water Utility warns homeowners about insurance letter going around

Posted: Updated:
Madison (WKOW)--  Many Madison homeowners are confused about a letter they've received advertising insurance for lateral water lines. The Madison Water Utility has been getting numerous calls about the letter.

Employees are trying to get two messages across. First of all, the insurance company that has been sending letters all across the city is not affiliated with the water utility in any way. Secondly, customers who receive these letters are not required to purchase the insurance.

Workers say there's confusion because earlier this year the city did partner with an insurance company to provide sewer insurance to homeowners. These recent letters from HomeServe USA are completely different and the company does not have a partnership with the city or water utility.

"People are already thinking about their service lateral more than they normally would and they're getting these letters, and they're wondering if they're from us or from the city or what. It is causing a huge amount of confusion," Madison Water Utility Public Information Officer Amy Barrilleaux says.

Utility employees say the company does appear to be legitimate and lateral line insurance is a real thing, but homeowners should be very cautious.

Anyone who receives this letter in the mail is urged to contact your homeowners insurance provider just to see if you are already covered or not. Secondly, you should contact the better business bureau or just visit their website to get a little more information before making any purchasing decisions.
