MADISON (WKOW) -- Sue Ellingson is leaving her position as Alder for Madison's 13th District.

In a statement, Ellingson said she has had pressing family matters arise in the last two months that require extended periods of time away from Madison. "I simply don't have the time to adequately represent my district, " Ellingson said in the statement.

Ellingson said serving on the council was one of the best experiences of her life and she regrets she is no longer able to serve.

A statement from the council said members were saddened to hear of Ellingson's resignation.

The process to fill the vacancy in District 13 will begin soon. The Common Council President oversees the application process to fill the vacancy. Applications are reviewed by a council committee, which makes a recommendation to the full council. Council members will then appoint a new alderperson. The council also has the option of calling a special election in November to fill the seat until the next regularly scheduled Common Council election in April 2015. If the council does not choose to hold a special election, the appointed alder will serve until April 2015.
