Girls at WIAA championships serving as role models to keep sport alive

Posted: Updated:
GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- While the girls are competing at the WIAA championships, they took the time over the weekend to serve as mentors.

The mentor program is new this year and it was aimed at getting younger girls involved in the sport. The WIAA paired each team with elementary school players from the Green Bay area.

Deb Hauser, Associate Director of the WIAA, says the hope is to keep the tradition alive.

"We thought if we gave little kids in the area a taste of what it might be like that someday they would aspire to be here and play in the state tournament," said Hauser.

In recent years, fewer girls have been participating in High School basketball programs across the state.
