Excitement around Madison builds as Badgers, fans turn attention to Sweet 16

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Badgers take on the Baylor Bears on Thursday in the Sweet 16.

Tip off is set for 6:47 p.m.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison is still buzzing following the Badgers big win against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night.

Wisconsin will now play the winner of the Creighton vs. Baylor game in this week's round of regional semifinals, or "Sweet 16" games.

"I'm very excited," said UW senior Steve Buting. "I came back from studying abroad and this season was already halfway done."

"But I think they really have a solid team this year. Way better than last year's," Buting said.

At The University Book Store, at Hilldale Shopping Center, sales associate Renee Madden said Badger gear is flying off the shelves.

"(Saturday) it was pretty crazy," Madden said. "There were a lot of game parties going on last night and everyone wanted a new t-shirt or sweatshirt for the party."

Madden said the book store is also selling a lot of Badger hockey attire. The men's hockey team won the Big Ten tournament Saturday night.

"There's a big camaraderie going on," she said. "Everyone is coming and talking about what happened at the game, or what's going to happen.”

Madden added the book store is expecting to stay very busy in anticipation of this week’s Sweet 16 game.

“It’s going to just snowball,” Madden said. “People are going to be more interested than ever and want to follow the team. If there’s something new to get for the game, that’s always fun too.”

So how long will the Badgers’ run last?

“Final Four would be awesome,” Buting said. “They’re going to have a tough road. But I think as long as they start off each game strong... they’ll do great.”

Seniors Abby Phillips and Michelle Jackson said they hope the Badgers can keep winning because the success energizes the student body.

“Badger pride is the best thing in the world,” Jackson said. “Everybody seems to love everybody else and has a great time everywhere.”

“I think everyone is just upbeat when the team is doing well,” Madden said.
