Veterans being told Walker will sign asbestos lawsuit bill

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin veterans groups are standing down in their push to have Governor Scott Walker veto a bill affecting asbestos exposure lawsuits after being told the governor plans to sign the legislation.

Jason Johns, a lobbyist for the Military Order of the Purple Heart of Wisconsin, said Monday he emailed veterans telling them to back off in their efforts after a Walker aide told another veteran the governor planned to sign the bill. However, a spokesperson for the governor says he's still evaluating the measure.

Republican who pushed for the bill argue it will keep those bringing lawsuits from suing both businesses and trusts established to pay claims, while opponents have claimed the new requirements will delay and deny justice for those harmed by asbestos, including veterans.
