Police officer hit by car; pursuit ends when suspect crashes car

FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- A police officer was knocked to the ground after being hit by a car.

According to the Fitchburg Police Department, officers were trying to make contact with a suspicious vehicle on the 2900 block of Fish Hatchery Road at the Mobil Gas Station. An officer directed a passenger to exit the vehicle, while the passenger complied, the driver put the car into reverse and accelerated.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The suspect's car hit the officer and passenger, knocking them to the ground. The suspect then rammed into the squad car two times. The rear bumper of the suspect's vehicle was detached.

The suspect fled the scene. Officers were able to track the suspect traveling westbound on the Beltline. The pursuit with the suspect continued through Madison and through the City of Middleton. The suspect ended up crashing the vehicle on Gammon Road and Fortune Road. The suspect had to be extricated from the car and was taken to a local hospital.

The suspect has serious injuries, but not life threatening. The officer and passenger that were hit by the car were taken to a local hospital and then released from the hospital.

Twenty-eight-year-old Shannon Patterson from Janesville was arrested. Patterson faces the following charges: two counts of reckless endangerment, OWI causing injury, fleeing an officer, parole violation, obstructing an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.
