Wisconsin ranks 3rd in the nation for potato production

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- We know that Wisconsin is America's Dairyland, but our state's agriculture offers so much more, including healthy and delicious potatoes, which come in a rainbow of varieties.

Kristin Olson, the 66th Alice in Dairyland of the Wisconsin Department Agriculture Trade and consumer protection, says Wisconsin actually ranks third in the nation, and first east of the Mississippi for growing potatoes. She says they're a huge part of our $59 billion agriculture community, saying potatoes contribute nearly $260 million to the Wisconsin economy, resulting in over 2,000 jobs.

Olson says potatoes actually have a lot of health benefits too. She says one medium sized potato only has 110 calories, and they're free of fat, cholesterol, sodium and gluten. She also says one potato provides you with 45 percent of your recommended daily Vitamin C and has more potassium than a banana.

Olson says it's important for our state's economy to buy Wisconsin nutrient-packed spuds.
