President Obama visits Pope

Posted: Updated:
VATICAN CITY (AP) -- President Barack Obama is holding a historic first meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican Thursday.

President Obama calls this meeting "a great honor."

Archbishop Georg Ganswein escorted Obama into the meeting.  U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and other top officials are accompanying the president at the Vatican.

President Obama is the ninth president to make an official trip to the Vatican.  The trip is a change of pace following three days of working to secure European unity against Russia's aggressive posture toward Ukraine.

President Obama also visited Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
