Dane County issues warning about deteriorating ice

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- With recent rainfall and warmer temperatures in the forecast, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Trail deputies are alerting people to rapidly deteriorating ice conditions on area lakes.

The Sheriff's Office says recent warm weather conditions have drastically reduced ice thickness and stability on Dane County lakes.

The office is reminding ice anglers to stay away from icy areas where current or flowage may be present. Mouths of creeks, rivers and natural springs all create small currents that can resist ice accumulation, even under perfect conditions.

If you do go out on an area lake, the Dane County Sheriff's Office highly recommends bringing appropriate flotation and life-saving equipment like ice picks and life preservers.
