Police lobbies an ideal site for Craigslist swaps

Posted: Updated:
RACINE (AP) -- When Branden Kerr, of Racine, sold his Sony PlayStation on Craigslist this month, he conducted the swap at a Milwaukee police station.

It's not often that buyers and sellers conduct business at police departments, but officers encourage the idea. They say it's a neutral location that allows both parties to keep their home addresses private. Having officers around also decreases the likelihood of swindling. Jackson Police Chief Jed Dolnick runs the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association. He supports the idea, although he recommends calling the station first. He says some may not have spacious lobbies, and others aren't open 24 hours a day.

Kerr says an earlier buyer backed out of a deal after Kerr suggested meeting at a police station. He says that suggests the buyer was shady.
