Fire displaces 6 people at Madison apartment building

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A morning fire sent six people out of their homes Saturday morning.

Madison fire officials say crews were sent to a report of a dryer fire in a 60-unit apartment complex on Main Street in Madison around 8 a.m. Residents of the building took action quickly after calling 911, helping several people in wheelchairs get out of the apartment complex and attempting to put out the fire with an extinguisher.

The building's sprinkler system was activated and put out the fire. No one was hurt, despite significant smoke inside. Damage in two apartments is estimated at $10,000.

Six people and their caretakers were displaced because of the fire. The Red Cross assisted three with housing and other needs. Everyone else was able to return to their apartments.
