Jefferson Award Winners Honored

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW)-- Each month 27 News recognizes a member of the community who goes above and beyond to help others. It’s called the Jefferson Award and Wednesday, the last year’s nominees were honored.

At the banquet the last 12 Jefferson Award winners were recognized and now one will go on to represent the area at the national award ceremony.

“I feel like I was among angels,” said Angela Joseph, who accepted the award for Barb Knopf, September 2013’s winner. “12 angels who give so much to so many.”

From helping kids to helping the hungry to rescuing animals, these volunteers go above and beyond to better the community.

All the winners were nominated by someone in the area for their work. And one honoree, Barb Knopf is the Jefferson Award winner headed to the national award ceremony. Knopf couldn’t attend the banquet so her friend Angela Joseph accepted the honor on her behalf.

“She'll take this very humbly and she'll be excited,” Joseph said. “Just be really excited though that she's representing these amazing people.”

Knopf runs the nonprofit Veterans Equine Trail Services or V.E.T.S. which uses horse therapy to help those who served in the armed forces.

"If I can help one mother's daughter, one mother's son, one neighbor, one nephew, someone who's put their life on the line for our freedoms, and help keep them from having one bad day, one bad month or thinking about committing suicide or returning back to their family with an open line of communication, I don't care if I eat beanie weenies for the rest of my life," Knopf said when she was interviewed for her Jefferson Award.

Knopf will travel to Washington, DC in June to represent South Central Wisconsin and the volunteer spirit of all of the last year's Jefferson Award winners.
