Northwestern Wisconsin digs out from nearly a foot of snow

Posted: Updated:
SUPERIOR (AP) -- Northwestern Wisconsin is digging out from a spring snowstorm that's dropped about a foot of new snow in some communities, and will likely dump even more.

Some school districts are adding another day to their list of closings this season. Ashland, Bayfield, Birchwood, Hayward and Hurley are among districts choosing to cancel classes Friday.

Forecasters say 12 inches of snow has fallen in the small Douglas County community of Hawthorne, 11 1/2 inches at Maple and Ashland and Superior have about 10 inches of fresh snow.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for west central Wisconsin through the afternoon where the snow was expected to increase in scope and intensity.
