Badger fans get creative to get to Final Four

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Metcalfe Sentry grocery store owner Tim Metcalfe and two friends were determined Friday to find flights to get to Dallas and the Badgers basketball team's appearance in the Final Four, but a connecting flight fell through, leaving them at the Dane County Regional Airport, almost out of travel options.

As Metcalfe worked his cell phone and ticket agents, Ron Krantz of Madison had no such worries.

His arrangements have been in place for quite some time. Krantz is a veteran of this trip.

"I've been to the Final Four thirty-five years in a row," Krantz says.

Airport spokesperson Brent McHenry says most of the flights Thursday and Friday to Dallas included Badger fans and were problem-free.

UW-Madison sophomore Ashley Krause considered flying to Dallas to get to her seat for Saturday's game, but earlier this week learned she could only book a flight to Oklahoma City.

Krause instead took to Facebook, and found former high school classmate and fellow UW student Mike Simonson was looking for people to share the costs of a road trip to Dallas.

"I guess it's the beauty of social media. He saw my Facebook post, so he reached out to me and it kind of went from there," Krause says.

Krause, Simonson, and two other students piled into UW student Cameron Heinzen's Pontiac Grand Prix Friday for the fifteen hour drive, with several of the road trippers meeting each other for the first time.

"If we're spending fifteen hours within a foot of each other, you know there's going to be bonding going on," Heinzen says.

As for Metcalfe, Delta Airlines found his group flights from Madison to Detroit to Tulsa.

"And we're driving two hundred fifty miles, and we're in Dallas," Metcalfe says.

Krantz says everyone going will be happy to experience this Wisconsin run, and the Final Four.

"It's euphoric," Krantz says. "I've been to a number of of Super Bowls, but they can't hold a candle to the Final Four."
