Milwaukee street being renamed to honor fallen soldier

Posted: Updated:
MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A street in Milwaukee is being renamed, to honor a fallen Wisconsin soldier.

Specialist Michelle Witmer was the first female National Guard soldier from Wisconsin to die in combat. She was killed in April of 2004 during an attack in Baghdad.

A section of an east-side Milwaukee street will be renamed in her honor. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says the street will help the public remember Witmer's sacrifices.

"It's important for us as citizens to never forget those who make the ultimate sacrifice," said Barrett.

The section of the road is home to the Richards Street Armory, where Witmer served in the 32nd Military Police Company.
