WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- Waunakee Community School District has some of the best math students in the state.
Results from the latest statewide, standardized test, the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) show 80.4 percent of students at Waunakee are proficient in math. That's among all ages, which is pretty rare.
That number is significantly higher than the statewide average, at 48.6 percent. Waunakee students ranked above the state average in all five subjects on the WKCE tests.
The district's curriculum and instruction director, Tim Schell, tells 27 News you can't base every student's learning experience off test scores, but this is good news. He says this is the first time he's seen students do so well in math in two decades. Schell attributes the scores to hard work and teacher collaboration.
"For the better part of a decade now we've been putting extra emphasis on our math program, on having common assessments, lots of professional development for our teachers on an ongoing basis, also careful selection of our math materials and I think that certainly has been a major benefit to us," says Schell.
Jane Fazio is a middle school math teacher and leads the math department at the district. She says a unique effort to arrange teacher prep hours so all math teachers can work together has helped the educators understand what works and what needs to be changed.
"Everybody works together and when we get together and talk about the goods and the bads, what we need to improve on, everybody's on the same page, all the kids are on the same page, it doesn't matter what building you're in," says Fazio.
She says she was surprised to see Waunakee out-performing most other schools in the state, but says she's proud of the students and all their hard work.
The district has also improved its scores among students identified as struggling with math. Waunakee has hired on several teachers to focus on the at-risk children, leading to the better performance.
Only three other schools out-performed Waunakee in the math category of this year's WKCE test, all in Waukesha County. In our area, Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District was close behind Waunakee, with 77.2 percent of students proficient in math.
