UW System finished March with $1.7 billion

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (AP) -- New figures from the University of Wisconsin System show the system finished the first three quarters of fiscal year 2013-14 with more than $1.7 billion on hand.

The system released data Thursday that shows campuses had a combined $1.73 billion on hand at the end of March. System officials expect to finish the fiscal year on June 30 with $1.1 billion on hand.

System officials have taken intense criticism over the last year for building massive reserves while raising tuition year after year.

The state budget Gov. Scott Walker signed in June requires the Board of Regents to craft a policy on how much cash campuses can keep on hand. The regents' finance committee was expected to vote on the policy Thursday.
