UW's Lihrman bringing the hammer down on the hammer throw

MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- Badgers redshirt junior Michael Lihrman is bringing down the hammer on the hammer throw. Just one meet into the season of the men's track and field team, Lihrman is already smashing records.

Last weekend at the University of Florida Relays, he broke his own school record in the hammer throw by nearly six feet, reaching 226 feet 8 inches.

Lihrman only picked up the sport just a few years ago when he started his college career at UW-Stout, before transferring to Madison last year.

Now a Badger, he has already set a national record and won a national championship last month in the weight throw, the indoor version of the hammer.

"When I was in division three looking at this, I never thought I would do so well in a division one setting," Lihrman said. "At that time, I would've been amazed to think this would happen. But now that it's happened, it doesn't seem to set in ever because my ultimate goal is to go to the Olympics."
