Leaf mulch fundraiser benefits Olbrich Gardens

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The Olbrich Botanical Gardens began selling leaf mulch made right on the grounds on Saturday.

Customers could buy individual bags or purchase it in bulk. The mulch is made from leaves collected by the city of Madison during the fall.

"The city doesn't have to truck the leaves away to a compost site; instead, they're bringing them here," says Katy Plantenberg, a special events coordinator at Olbrich Gardens. "We're turning them into something really usable and beneficial for homeowners and their gardens."

Plantenberg says the mulch is ideal for any kind of garden.

"Leaf mulch is going to help hold in themoisturee for your gardens and reduce weeding," says Plantenberg. "You can put it around shrubs, annuals, perennials, or vegetable gardens. It's just really great for any type of garden."

The mulch sale is a fundraiser for the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Saturday's full-service sale included volunteers that helped load the mulch into customers' cars. Anyone can purchase mulch every day at the gardens between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. but will have to load the mulch themselves. Another full-service sale will be held in May.
