Fire at a Prairie du Chien mall

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN (WKOW) -- Firefighters worked into the early morning hours to extinguish a fire at a Prairie du Chien mall.

The fire started Sunday night around 7 p.m. at the Slumberland store in the Blackhawk Junction Mall.  Eight fire departments battled the blaze.  When crews arrived, the fire was about fifty feet away from the entrance.  Nobody was injured.

The business was closed at the time, but an alarm system called it in.  Firefighters evacuated a dozen people from their homes behind the mall.  The high school is temporary shelter for those in need, but most are staying with friends or family.

The Prairie du Chien fire chief says neighboring stores have smoke damage.  The fire was contained to Slumberland, but the store went up in flames quickly.

The fire is still under investigation, and crews will likely tear down part of the building.
