U.S. Rep. Petri to officially announce retirement Monday

Posted: Updated:
NEENAH (WKOW) -- U.S. Congressman Tom Petri plans to formally announce his retirement plans on Monday, after more than three decades representing Wisconsin's 6th District.

Rep. Petri is expected to talk more about his reasons for retiring at a Monday afternoon town hall meeting in Neenah.

The 73-year-old is considered a centrist Republican in a political party moving further right, and he would have faced a rare primary challenge from more conservative candidates. Rep. Petri has faced just two primaries since 1996, and he had at least 82 percent support each time.

Petri spokesman Lee Brooks recently said the congressman would run for at least one more term, but last Friday said the congressman's reversal was a result of "several factors" and that Petri would elaborate Monday.
