MADISON (WKOW) -- April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. All victims of sexual assault have important resources available to them, but may not know where to start.

Meriter's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program helps about 400 victims each year begin the healing process. It's the only program in Dane County that offers 24/7 care.

When a victim goes to SANE, the specially trained staff first ensures they're medically OK. They do STD and pregnancy prevention and evidence collection. Victims will also be given access to resources, including the Rape Crisis Center.

If someone is unsure what happened to them, they should call 608-417-6000, and ask for an on-call SANE nurse.

Kim Curran, the SANE Program Co-Coordinator, joins us on 27 News at 5 on Tuesday.
